Biomecta
Diosmectite
Helps manage and treat.
Each 3.76 g sachet contains: Diosmectite 3.0 g.
Biomecta contains “diosmectite” an activated natural aluminosilicate clay consisting of a double aluminium and magnesium silicates.
It is an intestinal adsorbent widely used for the treatment of acute diarrhea in children and adults. Diosmectite has a lamellar, non-Fibrous crystalline structure, which gives it strong adsorptive properties.
It is insoluble in water and exerts a protective effect within the intestine.
Diosmectite interacts with intestinal mucus molecules to strengthen the mucosal barrier by altering the chemical nature of mucopolysaccharides.
This significantly reduces the penetration of luminal antigens, toxins, bacteria and rotavirus through the mucus layer. In addition, diosmectite reduces inflammation, modifies mucus rheological properties, inhibits mucolysis, and adsorbs bacteria, bacterial enterotoxins, viruses and other potentially diarrheogenic substances.
Adults: 3 -6 sachet per day for7 days or till recovery. The content of the sachet should be diluted in 50ml or half a glass of water. Do not exceed the recommended intake or as directed by your health care practitioner.
Children: Infants up to 12 months: 1.5 g.
Children 12 months and older: 3 g.Doses can be given up to 1-4 times daily, for 3 days and up to 6 days or as directed by the health care practitioner.
The required amount from one sachet should be mixed with 50 cc of milk or water in a feeding bottle, or with semi-solid food such as puree, and consumed throughout the day. Do not exceed the recommended intake.
Diosmectite is contraindicated in cases of intestinal obstruction and in individuals who are hypersensitive to any of the components of the product.
In general, diosmectite is well tolerated. The most common side effects are usually mild and include constipation and vomiting. Long-term use of diosmectite may lead to iron deficiency anemia and hypokalemia, particularly in patients with renal insufficiency.
Most of the gastrointestinal disorders are associated with dehydration. Proper rehydration must be used in such cases. Diosmectite can be used along alongside rehydration therapy.; however, it is an adsorbent and not a substitute for rehydration therapy. If symptoms do not improve within 6 days, or if they are accompanied by pain, fever, or vomiting, consult your physician.
Due to its adsorbent properties, diosmectite may bind to other substances such as Cimetidine, Quinine, and Metronidazole, potentially reducing their absorption and effectiveness. In such cases, other medications should be taken either 2 hours before or after administration of diosmectite.
When taking Iron, Zinc or Potassium supplements, diosmectite should also be administered at least 2 hours apart from these products.
It is not safe in pregnancy as it might cause the risk of high blood pressure or swelling there is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking this product during lactation.
Diosmectite is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its lack of systemic absorption. However, since constipation is common during pregnancy, be sure to consult your doctor before use.
