Each 3.76 g sachet contains: Diosmectite 3.0 g.
Biomecta contains diosmectite, a naturally activated aluminosilicate clay composed of double aluminium and magnesium silicates. It functions as an intestinal adsorbent and is widely used for the management of acute diarrhea in both children and adults.
Diosmectite features a lamellar, non-fibrous crystalline structure, which imparts potent adsorptive capabilities. Although insoluble in water, it exerts a protective action within the intestine by interacting with intestinal mucus. This interaction modifies the chemical structure of mucopolysaccharides, thereby reinforcing the mucosal barrier and significantly limiting the passage of luminal antigens, toxins, bacteria, and rotavirus through the mucus layer.
Additionally, diosmectite: Reduces intestinal inflammation.
Modifies mucus rheology to improve barrier function.
Inhibits mucolysis.
Adsorbs bacteria, viruses, bacterial enterotoxins, and other diarrheogenic agents.
These combined actions help restore intestinal integrity and provide effective symptom relief in diarrheal conditions.
Adults: 3 -6 sachet per day for 7 days or till recovery. The content of the sachet should be diluted in 50ml or half a glass of water. Do not exceed the recommended intake or as directed by your health care practitioner.
Children: Infants up to 12 months: 1.5 g.
Children 12 months and older: 3 g.Doses can be given up to 1-4 times daily, for 3 days and up to 6 days or as directed by the health care practitioner.
Content of the sachet should be diluted in a feeding bottle or glass with 50ml water or can be mixed with a semiliquid food such as puree, baby food which can be administered throughout the day. Do not exceed the recommended intake.
Diosmectite use should be avoided in intestinal occlusion and if the patient is hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Generally, it is well tolerated. The most common adverse effects are generally mild and include constipation and vomiting. Long term use of diosmectite can cause iron defciency anemia and hypokalemia (particularly in patients with renal insuficiency).
Most of the gastrointestinal disorders are associated with dehydration. Proper rehydration must be used in such cases. Diosmectite can be used along with rehydration therapy. Diosmectite is an adsorbent and is not a rehydration therapy. If the symptoms do not improve within 7 days and is associated with pain, fever or vomiting, consult your physician.
Due to the adsorbent properties, disomectite can adsorb other substances like Cimetidine, Quinine and Metronidazole hence hinder their absorption and effect. In such cases, other medications need to be administered either 2 hours before or after administration of diosmectite. While taking Iron, Zinc or Potassium supplements, diosmectite needs to be administered either 2 hours before or after these products.
